Fungi:> Basidiomycota:> Agaricomycetes :> Agaricales :> Bolbitiaceae :> Bolbitius, Conocybe, Descolea, Descomyces, Panaeolus, Panaeolina.
The Bolbitiaceae are a family of small to medium-sized agarics characterised by fragile, thin-fleshed fruitbodies, brown spore prints, and a hymeniderm (cellular) pileipellis, a key microscopic feature uniting the group. Most members are saprotrophic, occurring in grasslands, lawns, dung, compost, or rich soil, though a distinct Gondwanan lineage (e.g., Descolea, Descomyces) is ectomycorrhizal. Caps are typically conical to campanulate, often hygrophanous, with stems long and slender. Genera such as Bolbitius, Conocybe, Pholiotina, and Panaeolina are common worldwide, while Descolea and its relatives are more restricted. Molecular work has reshaped the family, removing Agrocybe and confirming the placement of Descolea within Bolbitiaceae.
Genus: Bolbitius
This genus comprises of small, delicate, Mycena-like mushrooms with glutinous, often brightly coloured caps that fade rapidly and become deeply sulcate-striate as they expand. Fruitbodies are ephemeral, typically lasting only a day or two, and are easily damaged.

Genus: Conocybe
Conocybe is a genus of small, delicate, brown-spored agarics, characterised by their conical caps, rusty-brown spores, and especially their lecythiform (oil-flask-shaped) cystidia.

Genus: Descolea
Descolea is a genus of ectomycorrhizal agarics, notable for its Gondwanan distribution, recognised by a large membranous collar, ochraceous spore print, and limoniform, verrucose spores. It was once placed in the Cortinariaceae but molecular work now firmly situates it within the Bolbitiaceae.

Descolea phlebophora Descolea phlebophora
Genus: Panaeolus
Panaeolus is a genus of small to medium-sized, saprotrophic agarics characterised by their mottled gills, black spore print, and smooth, thick-walled spores with a distinct germ pore. They are common on dung, manured soils, lawns, and pastures.

Genus: Panaeolina
Panaeolina is a small genus of brown-spored, saprotrophic agarics most easily recognised by their dark brown to purplish-brown spore print and distinctly verrucose (warty) spores. They are common in lawns, pastures, parks, and grassy habitats.

Genus: Descomyces
Descomyces is a genus of secotioid fungi, characterised by partially enclosed fruitbodies, a rubbery to leathery peridium, and a loculate gleba lacking true gills. The genus represents a gasteroid evolutionary lineage derived from agaricoid ancestors, closely related to Descolea and Pholiotina.
