Members of the pluteus genus are distinguished by having no volva or ring, and pluteus normal grows on damp spongy wood. The strip commonly has a grey-blue tint and a bulbous base. The gills are fine and crowded with pink spores. Under a microscope, the cystidia can be easily seen.
